Hi Gene. Check valves should typically be replaced anytime you replace your sump pump or every 5-7 years.

Planning to install Zoeller 230-0041 Clear PVC check valve. Prefer to install horizontal. Does it make any difference which side is up? To ask the question another way, should the valve spring installed at the top or on the bottom of the offset?
Don M

Answer
Definitely! If installed horizontally, you want the pivot or spring side of the valve in the top position.

Reading through one of the previous Q&As, you wrote that the check valve is generally installed about 1/2 - 2/3 up the vertical section of the discharge line (assuming 5'-10' vertical section). Why so high? I've seen a few installations where the check valve is right near the base of the line. Don't know which way is better.

Answer
Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. While either installation is feasible and will work, my suggestion will reduce stress on the pump when starting due the the extra weight of the water sitting on top of that check valve when it's located at the pump discharge port. In addition, it makes for an easier access point for any servicing that may be needed on your system.
