How often do you recommend changing check valves on this model?

Answer
Hi Gene. Check valves should typically be replaced anytime you replace your sump pump or every 5-7 years.

Is there a check valve that can be mounted horizontally and not leak back.. I,have a,battery backup, pump with a horizontal pipe, with a check valve that leaks back slowly when the primary pump shuts off. I would like to resolve it.,if I change the check valve it doesn't leak, for a short time then begins to leak back. Maybe scale or debris keeps from sealing or gravity allows the flapper to open slightly. The water column is about 5 ft up before an elbow to the outside horizontal run to storm sewer.
Could it be the position of the check valve maybe needs to be rotated so the flapper is hanging down verticle?

Answer
To start off, each pump should have a check valve installed inline. The Zoeller 1-1/2" and 2" slip-on check valves can be mounted in a horizontal position. The pivot point of the flapper however, should be in the top position. It is also possible that there is some foreign debris or scale that is preventing the valve from closing completely, thus causing the leaking. How old is this check valve? They should be replaced every 5-7 years or whenever you replace your pump as they will also wear out over time.
