Answer
Hi Gene. Check valves should typically be replaced anytime you replace your sump pump or every 5-7 years.

Answer
Well, there are actually compression fittings or slip on like the Zoeller 30-0181 - 1-1/2" or 1-1/4" Slip-On Full Flow PVC Check Valve. The standard check valves use a rubber flapper for flow control whereas the silent check valves use a spring loaded rubber flapper for more positive operation which also helps to reduce the noise when the flapper closes.
Compression fittings will usually greatly reduce the possibility of any leaking at the connection point.
In most cases, a standard check valve will work fine but if you have a history of loud or "clunking" check valves, a silent model should help to reduce that noise.
