Answer
Diaphragm pumps are designed more for pumping mud or thicker-than-water substances that are NOT flammable or that contain chemicals. These pumps are also meant to handle lower head lifts and shorter pumping distances.

What does it take to start the pump if it is located within 5 feet of the water surface on this "non self-priming" pump?

Answer
While most pumps are actually listed as "Self-Priming", with the exception on this one, they will require you to prime the pump by filling the priming port and pump housing with water upon initial installation, to force any air out and allow for the impeller to start sucking water. Any air pockets left in the lines or the pump will cause the pump to become air-bound. An air-bound pump will not operate properly until the air is removed and replaced by water. As long as a check or foot valve is installed on the suction pipe and you never lose suction, you should not need to re-prime the pump.

Will this unit pump from a river to a pond with a vertical lift of 14 feet, over 600 feet (pond has an 80 foot vertical rise)?

Answer
Since you are looking at a total head lift of 94 feet (14 feet suction and 80 feet, discharge) and the QP3TH pump is rated for a total head lift of 95 feet, I would NOT recommend it. You still have 600 feet of horizontal run, which will add more head lift due to FRICTION LOSS. So, based on your information, I would suggest the Multiquip QP205SH - 106 GPM (2") High Pressure Water Pump w/ Honda GX Engine. This pump would provide between 60 & 72GPM with 0 pressure based on a 2" or 3" discharge PVC pipe for that 600 foot run. If you want some pressure behind that flow, you will see even less GPM depending on how much pressure you want. At the very least, 45 & 52GPM with a 2" or 3" discharge at 10PSI.
