I plan to replace a 30 yer old pump that is at 200 ft. and lower the new pump to 250 ft in a 400 ft deep well. Will I need to a check valve mid way up as well as at the well head?
Ken G

Answer
Most submersible deep well pumps include a built-in check valve at the discharge port of the pump and It is recommended that additional spring loaded in-line check valves be installed in the drop pipe @ 200ft intervals only.

what parts are involved with submersible pumps that can fail and breakdown or if it doesn't work you just have to replace the entire pump?

Answer
When it comes to 2-wire deep well submersible pumps, the pump starting controls are located inside the pump. Any of these components can fail and cause the pump to become inoperable. By installing a 3-wire pump, those components would be located inside a CONTROL BOX, making repairs much easier when failure of these components are the cause of your pump not operating. Of course if the pump has failed due to burnt motor windings or some other cause, would would still need to pull and replace the pump, but you would have a better understanding of the pump status when the pump starting components are above ground as opposed to 50-500 feet or more, below ground.

Hi Jim,
I have a well with 4 inch bore (pipe with 4" ID) and want to switch to a 4" submirsible pump. my question is with a 4" submirsible pump how much clearance do i need.
does the bore not need to be much larger then 4" otherwise how will the pump suck water if the will pipe walls are touching the pump.
