I have read that this pump utilizes a Franklin motor, is this true?

Answer
Red Lion, while a division of Franklin Electric, does NOT use a Franklin motor on their deep well pumps. The Red Lion Deep Well Pumps include a VHC motor which is also a division of Franklin Electric. Little Giant Deep Well Pumps, on the other hand, are also a division of Franklin Electric and DO include the Franklin motor.

what parts are involved with submersible pumps that can fail and breakdown or if it doesn't work you just have to replace the entire pump?

Answer
When it comes to 2-wire deep well submersible pumps, the pump starting controls are located inside the pump. Any of these components can fail and cause the pump to become inoperable. By installing a 3-wire pump, those components would be located inside a CONTROL BOX, making repairs much easier when failure of these components are the cause of your pump not operating. Of course if the pump has failed due to burnt motor windings or some other cause, would would still need to pull and replace the pump, but you would have a better understanding of the pump status when the pump starting components are above ground as opposed to 50-500 feet or more, below ground.

what is the purpose of the control box and can it be eliminated?

Answer
Three wire submersible motors require a control box. Control boxes contain a starting relay, starting capacitors and in some cases overload protectors. Two wire submersible motors have these components built into them and do not require a control box.
One benefit of using a three wire motor with a control box is that some of the components that are subject to failure are located above ground where you can get to them without pulling the pump.
Control boxes should never be mounted in direct sunlight or in locations that are extremely hot, this causes the capacitor life to be shortened and can cause nuisance overload trips. Do not mount the control box in a humid location such as a damp well pit since voltage breakdown and corrosion will accelerate component failure in this condition.
Control boxes are designed for vertical, upright mounting only. Any other position will affect the operation of voltage sensing relays in larger sizes and may result in water leakage.
